This application profile describes the elements required for a digital collection of historical quilts. The elements are inspired by the quilt collection from the Minnesota Historical Society's digital quilt collection. Additional elements added to the application profile include Weight, changing measurements from Centimeters to Inches, adding American Bed Size, Machine or Handmade, separating Use into its own element (it was previously included under Subjects), and updated Descriptions. This metadata application profile could be used by anyone wishing to catalog a collection of quilts.
The elements can be customized for any quilt collection regardless of location. This project focuses on Americana quilts of the state of Minnesota, but descriptions can be updated to include quilts from any state with any creator/owner. The metadata application profile below would be an excellent starting point for genealogical research based on physical objects owned by family members, historical collections, or personal interest projects.
The Type element will require a controlled vocabulary in the future, as there can be some dispute on what constitutes a "patchwork" quilt, among others. The controlled vocabulary will need to have recommendations for how to identify quilt types, as well as suggestions for how to describe them with the application profile.
