Digital Literacy Initiative

Master of Library & Information Science Internship
The Digital Literacy Initiative is a large project hosted by the Salt Lake City Public Library and supported by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The Initiative's goals are to foster information and digital literacy to refugees in the Salt Lake area. Individuals interested in the program are recommended by the IRC; participants must sign an agreement to complete three weeks worth of instructional material with their assigned technology mentor. Prior to my joining the library as a graduate school intern, the material used for this program was a combination of reading material from websites and word documents. I proposed updating the courses to an interactive eLearning format that would allow users to explore and engage with the material in new ways.
I managed all aspects of this project's creation, development, and communication. The program spans three weeks, with two different level options offered depending on the background of the learner. For this project, I created six different eLearning courses using a variety of rapid authoring eLearning tools. After the completion of the modules, I completed a few user testing sessions with library volunteers to thoroughly test the material for accessibility, efficacy, and experience. I anticipate updates to be made to the modules as learners and volunteers continue to engage with the material. I have already proposed a few new courses to develop that will be accessible to the library patron population at large, such as a module on how to manage passwords, as I continue to volunteer with the library.
